Amputee FKT? 2025 Tour Divide

Follow along as Dillen Maurer attempts to become the first amputee to complete the Tour Divide race! Since no amputee has yet raced self-supported from Banff to Antelope Wells, any finish time will technically be an FKT (a record Dillen hopes can someday inspire others to surpass). With a goal of 100 miles/day and over 150,000 feet of elevation, Dillen hopes to cross the finish line in 28 days.

Racing for a cause

Dillen’s hope of becoming the first amputee to finish the Tour Divide is bolstered by the cause for which he is racing—the Range of Motion Project (ROMP). They are an organization providing prosthetic care to underserved communities in Central and South America—areas of the world where amputees often face the reality that they will never walk again, let alone hike, bike, or play. The goal is to raise $10,000 for ROMP, and you can donate directly to them HERE. Dillen is also donating 50% of all sales from his merch shop.

Dillen is racing the 2025 Tour Divide in an effort to showcase how vitally important athletic prosthetics are for amputees. Even though the United State has some of the most comprehensive and expansive care available to amputees, the majority of devices are still not covered by insurance. The leg he uses daily to ride his bike (which will be the leg he uses to race Tour Divide) was donated by a grant and took nine months to receive. Expanding health insurance coverage will greatly improve access to the devices necessary to be active—not all prosthetics are appropriate for cycling, running, hiking, or playing sports and yet amputees are only provided one leg by insurance. Earlier this year he testified before Washington state House & Senate committees as part of So EveryBODY Can Move in favor of HB 1669, which has since become the first law in Washington state to guarantee prosthetics for activity will be covered by insurance—Washington is now the 9th state to guarantee this care. While this small step forward is essential to bridge the gap and create a more equitable healthcare system for amputees, many other countries do not have the infrastructure or access to care to provide quality prosthetics to citizens experiencing limb loss.
